Sandown is a town located in the Southeastern corner of New Hampshire in the Seacoast region of the state. It is situated in central Rockingham County and encompasses a total area of 14.4 square miles, .5 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town?s total population was 5,986 residents.
The land that comprises Sandown was once considered a part of the nearby town of Kingston. In 1756, it was incorporated as a town of its own by Governor Benning Wentworth. Its name comes from a place called Sandown, located on the Isle of Wight in England. The town boasts .5 square miles of water, which accounts for more than 3 percent of Sandown?s total area. The Exeter River, Phillips Pond and Angle Pond are just a few of the bodies of water found in the town.
The town of Sandown is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen. It boasts a full-time police department, a full-time fire chief, a volunteer fire department and volunteer emergency services. The top employers in the area are White Oak Farm, a local cookie factory, and Compliance Properties, LLC, a property management firm. Children in the area attend schools in the Timberlane Regional School District, which also serves the nearby towns of Atkinson, Danville and Plaistow.
For recreation and entertainment, residents of Sandown can take advantage of the town?s municipal parks, museums, youth organizations and sports leagues, campground, fishing and hunting areas, marinas, snowmobile and bicycle trails, cross country skiing slops and beach areas. The town offers a parks and recreation department, too, which provides children?s programming, community events, senior and adult programs, dance and fitness classes, and organized field trips. Sandown is also only a few miles from the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border, the Manchester Regional Airport and the seacoast.
