Franklin is a city located in central New Hampshire in the Merrimack Valley region of the state. It is situated in Northern Merrimack County and encompasses a total area of 29.1 square miles, 1.9 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, Franklin was home to 8,477 people.

The land that comprises Franklin was first settled in 1764. At the time, it was known a Pemigewassat Village and was made up of former parts of Salisbury, Sanbornton, Andover and Northfield. In 1820, the area adopted the name Franklin in honor of Benjamin Franklin. In 1828, it was incorporated as a town and, finally, in 1895, it became a city.

More than 6 percent of Franklin's total area is made up of water. The city includes parts of the Winnipesaukee River, Pemigewassat River, Merrimack River and Webster Lake. Its highest point is located at a summer near its northwest border, where elevation reaches 1,370 feet above sea level. Over the years, Franklin has been called home by a number of notable people, including U.S. Senator and Congressman Daniel Webster, physicist G.W. Pierce, U.S. Congressman Robert M. Leach, physiologist Walter Bradford Cannon and historian John King Fairbank.

Franklin is governed by an elected mayor, city mayor and city council. The city boasts a full-time police department, a full-time fire department and municipal emergency medical services.
