Litchfield is a town located in Southern New Hampshire in the Merrimack Valley region of the state. It is situated in the Eastern part of Hillsborough County and encompasses a total area of 15.4 square miles, just .3 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, Litchfield was home to 8,271 people.

The land that comprises Litchfield was originally known as Naticook. In 1729, when it was officially granted to Rhode Island Governor William Brenton its name was changed to Brenton?s Farm. The area was incorporated as a town in 1734 and, when Brenton died in 1749, regranted to a new group of settlers. The settlers renamed the area Litchfield, after the Earl of Litchfield, George Henry Lee.

Just over 2 percent of Litchfield's total area is made up of water, and its highest point lies at Rocky Hill, where elevation reaches 357 feet above sea level. The town is served by New Hampshire Routes 3A and 102, as well as Interstates 293 and 93. Neighboring towns include Merrimack, Nashua, Londonderry and Windham. The nearest airport (Manchester-Boston Regional) is just six miles away.

Litchfield is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen. The town boasts a full-time police department, a full-time fire department and volunteer emergency medical services. The top employer in the area is NE Small Tube, a manufacturing company. Children in the town attend schools in the Litchfield School District, which includes on elementary school, one middle school and one high school.

For recreation and entertainment, Litchfield residents can take advantage of the town?s municipal parks, golf courses, tennis courts, museums, youth organizations, sports leagues, snowmobile and bicycle trails, cross country skiing opportunities and local beaches and waterfront areas. The town also boasts a public library and is within close proximity of the McIntyre ski resort.
