Newmarket is a town located in the Southeastern corner of New Hampshire in the Seacoast region of the state. The town is situated in the Northern part of Rockingham County and encompasses a total of 14.2 square miles, 1.6 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, Newmarket was home to 8,936 people.
Newmarket started as a parish of the nearby town of Exeter and, for a time, went by the name of Lampreyville, named for one of its early settlers, John Lamprey. It was officially incorporated as Newmarket in 1727 and was granted full town privileges by 1737. In its early years, the town was dominated by manufacturing and cotton textiles. For a time, the town of Newfields was considered a part of Newmarket. It was separated in 1849 and incorporated as its own town.
The town of Newmarket includes nearly two square miles of water, most of which comes from the Lamprey River and Great Bay. The highest point in the area is located at Bald Hill, where elevation reaches 281 feet above sea level, and the primary thoroughfares for the town include New Hampshire Route 108 and New Hampshire Route 152. Over the years, Newmarket has been called home by a number of notable people, including: U.S. Congressmen John Brodhead, George W. Kittredge and William B. Small; Emma Lenora Borden, the sister of Lizzie Borden; Justice of the Peace Wentworth Cheswell; Olympic bronze medalist Lynn Jennings.
Newmarket is governed by an elected town council. The area boasts a full-time police department, a full-time and on-call fire department and volunteer emergency services. The biggest employers in the area include SAU 31, Lamprey Health Care, Seacoast Sports Center and the Town of Newmarket. Children in the area attend schools in the Newmarket School District, which includes one elementary school, one middle school and one high school. For recreation, the town boasts several parks, golf courses, tennis course, bowling centers, fishing, hunting, youth sports, bicycle trails, boating and more.
