Sanbornton New Hampshire Homes For Sale

Sanbornton is a town located in Central New Hampshire in the Lakes region of the state. It is situated in Eastern Belknap County and encompasses a total area of 49.8 square miles, 2.2 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town was home to 2,966 people.

Sanbornton was first called "Crotchtown," because of its placement within the fork between the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers. In 1748, it was granted by Governor Benning Wentworth to John Sanborn and 59 other settlers who hailed from the nearby towns of Hampton, Exeter and Stratham. As many of the settlers shared John?s name, the town took on "Sanborntown." Permanent settlement of the area didn't begin until 1764, once the French and Indian War had subsided. It was officially incorporated in 1770, at which point it includes part of the town now known as Tilton.

More than 4 percent of Sanbornton's total area is made up of water. The town includes parts of Pemigewasset River, Winnipesaukee River, Winnisquam Lake and Salmon Brook. Its highest point lies at Hersey Mountain, where elevation reaches 2,001 feet above sea level. Over the years, the town has been home to a number of notable people, including meteorologist Don Kent, children's author Lois Lowry and religious leader Daniel S. Miles.

Sanbornton is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen. The town boasts a full-time police department, a volunteer fire department and volunteer emergency medical services. Top employers in the area include Steele Hill Resort, Redimix Concrete, Sant Bani School, Winnisquam Regional School District, Sanbornton General Store, Appletree Nursey and Den Brae Golf Course.

Children in the area attend schools in the Winnisquam Regional School District, which also serves the nearby towns of Tilton and Northfield.
