Croydon NH Real Estate

Croydon is a small town located in Western New Hampshire in the Dartmouth/Sunapee region of the state. It is situated in central Sullivan County and encompasses a total area of 37.5 square miles, .8 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, Croydon was home to 764 people.

The town of Croydon was officially incorporated in 1763, gleaning its name from a suburb of London, England, with the same title. One of the area?s first settlers was Captain Stephen Hall, who later established the first teacher training school in the country. He was also reported to be the first professor to use a blackboard in teaching.

Less than 3 percent of Croydon’s total area is a made up of water. The town’s highest point lies at Croydon Peak, where elevation reaches 2,760 feet above sea level, and the area lies completely within the Connecticut River watershed. Croydon is also home to Corbin Park, a 24,000-acre game preserve which extends into other neighboring towns. The town is served by New Hampshire Route 10 and Interstate 9. It is just 22 miles from the Lebanon Municipal Airport.

Croydon is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen. The town boasts a part-time police department, a private fire department and private emergency medical services. Children in the area attend the Croydon Village School for grades kindergarten through third. For grades fourth through 12th, they attend schools in the Newport School District, located in the nearby town of Newport. Dartmouth College is just 22 miles north of Croydon.

For recreation and entertainment, residents of Croydon can take advantage of the town?s various municipal parks, YMCA/YWCA branch, campgrounds, fishing and hunting areas, boating marinas, snowmobile trails and local waterfront areas. The town is also within close proximity to the Mount Sunapee ski area.
