Lempster is a town located in Western New Hampshire in the Dartmouth/Sunapee region of the state. It is situated in Southern Sullivan County and encompasses a total area of 32.8 square miles, .4 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, Lempster was home to 1,154 people.

The land that comprises Lempster was first granted in 1735 by Governor Jonathan Belcher. At the time, the area was simply known as "Number 9," as it was ninth in a line of forts designed to guard settlers from Native American raids. In 1753, the land was regranted by Governor Benning Wentworth, taking on the name "Dupplin." It was regranted for a third time in 1767 and named Lempster. It was officially incorporated as a town in 1772.

Less than 2 percent of Lempster's total area is made up of water. The town lies in both the Connecticut River and the Ashuelot River watersheds, and its highest point lies at Bean Mountain, where elevation reached 2,326 feet above sea level. The town is served by New Hampshire Route 10 and Interstate 91. Neighboring towns include Goshen, Newport, Marlow, Gilsum and Keene.

Lempster is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen. It utilizes the Sullivan County Sheriff's department, as well as volunteer fire fighters and emergency medical services. Top employers in the area include the Jolly Roger Moto-Sports Park, Lempster Wind LLC, Sturgeon's General Store and Ashuelot Valley Outdoor. Children in the area attend schools in the Goshen-Lempster Cooperative School District for grades kindergarten through eighth. For ninth through 12th grades, they attend SAU 71, which also serves the nearby towns of Newport, Sunapee, Kearsarge, Keene, Fall Mountain and Claremont.

For entertainment, Lempster residents can take advantage of the town's youth organizations, sports leagues, campgrounds, fishing and hunting areas, snowmobile trails and boating marinas. The town is also in close proximity to the Mount Sunapee ski area.
