The town was first granted by the Masonian Proprietors in 1749, gleaning its name from Sir Charles Middleton, a baron in England. After the Revolutionary War, the area was settled by families from the Lee and Rochester areas. Middleton was officially incorporated in 1778 and originally include the area now known as Brookfield. It was separated and incorporated as its own town in 1794.
