Rye is a town located in the Southeastern corner of New Hampshire in the Seacoast region of the state. It is situated in the far East region of Rockingham County and encompasses a total area of 36.7 square miles, 24.1 of which is water. As of the 2010 United States Census, Rye was home to 5,298 people.

Rye was home to the first settlement to ever exist in the state of New Hampshire. Originally called Pannaway, the settlement was established near Odiorne’s Point by a group of fishermen in 1623. In 1726, the area was incorporated as a parish into the nearby town of New Castle. In 1727 it was incorporated as its own town a renamed Rye. Over the years, Rye has been called home by a number of well-known people, including actress Liv Tyler, New Hampshire governors Craig Benson and Judd Gregg, U.S. Senator Scott Brown and author Dan Brown.

More than 24 square miles of Rye is water, accounting for more than 65 percent of the town?s total area. It’s located on the Atlantic Ocean and includes a cluster of islands located 10 miles from the mainland, called the Isles of Shoals. The highest point in the area is located at Breakfast Hill, where elevation reaches 151 feet about sea level.

The town of Rye is governed by an elected Board of Selectmen. The town boasts a full- and part-time police department, a municipal fire department and municipal emergency medical services. The town employers in the area include the Town of Rye, Petey’s Restaurant, Rye Airfield, Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, TD Bank and Rye Public Schools. Children in the area attend grades kindergarten through eight in town, at Rye Elementary School and Rye Jr. High. For grades nine through 12, students attend Portsmouth High School in the nearby town of Portsmouth.
